Cummins Internship Experience: Bridging Engineering Theory and Practice
In the summer of 2023, my internship at the Seymour Engine Plant, a pivotal division of Cummins Inc., provided a comprehensive experience that blended Test Facilities Engineering and mechanical engineering expertise. Here’s a deeper look into the pivotal roles and tasks that defined my internship.
Proactive Preventive Maintenance: Enhancing Efficiency
One of my core responsibilities was to streamline the plant's preventive maintenance operations. Working with the Seymour Engine Plant Preventive Maintenance website, I became an integral part of the admin team. My tasks ranged from verifying the accuracy of PM schedules to creating and revising job plans. This critical initiative ensured that high-horsepower engine test cells, among others, received timely and well-coordinated maintenance, reducing downtime and optimizing plant operations.
Transitioning and Troubleshooting: PTC CREO 7.0 Mastery
A substantial part of my role was the transition to PTC CREO 7.0, building on my foundation in SolidWorks. I engaged in rigorous self-study, including numerous tutorials, to gain mastery over CREO's capabilities. My efforts culminated in designing intricate parts and assembly drawings for projects, including the Charge Air Cooler 8 Metallic Skid. The designs were not only a test of my technical ability but also an exercise in cross-departmental communication, ensuring that the designs met the stringent standards of Cummins Inc.
Field and Facility Interaction: Collaborating with Technicians
While my internship was primarily office-based, involving significant design and planning work, it also required close collaboration with field technicians. This provided a balanced understanding of both theoretical design and practical application. Observing and interacting with technicians offered invaluable insights into the real-world challenges and intricacies of mechanical engineering, further solidifying my applied knowledge.
Expanding Horizons: Networking and Professional Development
Throughout my tenure, I actively participated in Cummins' broader community and environmental initiatives. The June Environmental Month Kickoff enlightened me about the company's sustainability goals and their significant strides toward green energy. Attending the Executive Speaker Series, I absorbed crucial career advice, understanding the importance of networking across all levels within the company. Engaging in social and sporting events allowed me to foster connections beyond the immediate work environment, enriching my internship with diverse perspectives and friendships.
Technical Endeavors: Detail-Oriented Design and Innovation
My technical contributions were both diverse and detailed. From the Charge Air Cooler to the creation of mounts for 30-liter engines, my role involved intricate 3D modeling and drafting accurate technical drawings. These tasks were conducted under the meticulous guidance of experienced engineers, ensuring that my contributions adhered to Cummins’ high engineering standards.
Ethical Practice: Committed to Confidentiality
In line with the non-disclosure agreement signed with Cummins Inc., I am dedicated to maintaining the confidentiality of the proprietary information I was privileged to access. The experiences and knowledge shared here reflect publicly available information and a commitment to uphold the principles of ethical engineering and corporate responsibility.
Conclusion: A Summer of Integrated Engineering Experience
My internship at Cummins was not just a summer job; it was a vital chapter in my engineering journey. It was an environment where I could apply academic knowledge to tangible projects, interact with seasoned professionals and technicians, and absorb the values of a leading engineering firm. I emerged from this experience with a fortified skill set, a deepened appreciation for the interplay between design and implementation, and a clarified vision for my future in the field.
