Schneider Electric - Manufacturing Engineer

3-month internship focusing on manufacturing engineering, data management, and automation.

Schneider Electric Internship Experience

During the summer of 2024, I interned at Schneider Electric, where I gained hands-on experience in the fields of manufacturing engineering and automation. My internship allowed me to engage in several key projects that improved both safety and efficiency within the plant.

Safety Enhancements on Assembly Lines

One of my tasks involved improving plant safety. I worked on identifying potential hazards along the assembly lines and implemented 3D-printed protective covers, which improved worker safety and prevented downtime, contributing to an injury-free work environment.

Improving Process Documentation and Accuracy

I collaborated with operators, team leaders, and engineers to update and correct work instructions for the production lines. This effort was crucial in ensuring that the processes met the company’s quality standards and improved overall process accuracy.

Assisting with New Assembly Line Implementation

As part of the team working on a new assembly line, I assisted by managing product data with Symphony (PLM) and Windchill (PDM), ensuring that documentation was accurate. I also created new Job Breakdown Structures (JBS) and Operating Work Standard (OWS) documents for four different products, which facilitated a smoother transition for the new line and minimized potential disruptions during implementation.

Optimizing Autonomous Guided Forklift (AGV) Systems - WILDCAT

The SEER autonomous forklift, known as WILDCAT, is a key component of a smart factory project aimed at using autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) to transport finished goods from final assembly lines to the shipping area of the manufacturing plant. A significant portion of my internship was dedicated to the optimization of WILDCAT. My responsibilities included analyzing operational issues and proposing solutions to enhance the system's efficiency. Check WILDCAT at work in the short video below:

I collaborated closely with the integrators and the project manager, not only assisting with the integration process but also contributing to the post-installation phase. My role involved remapping and performance tuning to improve WILDCAT's overall operation. Additionally, I worked with the integrators to communicate business needs and request quotes for specific solutions, ensuring that WILDCAT would be fully autonomous and seamlessly deployed at the Lexington plant.

Hands-On Technical Contributions

Beyond these projects, I also contributed to other technical tasks, including working on warehouse catalog updates, designing PPE signs, and assisting in the operation and preventive maintenance of an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR). My role involved collaborating with various teams, conducting field research, and supporting the implementation of solutions to improve workflow and safety within the plant.

Conclusion: A Valuable Learning Experience

Me and WILDCAT - Lexington Plant

My internship at Schneider Electric provided me with a solid foundation in manufacturing engineering and automation. The practical experience I gained in problem-solving, process improvement, automation, and cross-functional collaboration has been invaluable. This internship has significantly enhanced my understanding of how engineering principles are applied in a real-world setting and has prepared me for future challenges in the field.
